Bushfire plans for pets and livestock (October 2013)
Recent events in NSW are a reminder that pets and livestock should also be included in a bushfire plan.
DPIPWE have produced a fact sheet (attached) that lists the sort of pet and livestock issues that should be included in the bushfire plan.
Most importantly, it's not just about having a plan. It's also about ensuring that all the family (or in a business, all the staff) know, well before the fire season, what is in that bushfire plan in relation to pets and livestock. It is not the sort of discussion to have if/when the fire is close!
Animal health and welfare problems can be reduced greatly in a bushfire if the owners have planned properly. A good bushfire plan also reduces the stress in a bushfire situation - both for the owners and for the animals.
