Advice to pet rabbit owners (May 2016)
Pet rabbit owners are advised that a new strain of the rabbit calcivirus is present in Tasmania.
The V2 strain was first detected in Australia in 2015, and is present in the majority of states including the ACT, NSW, SA and VIC.
Owners are advised to consult their veterinarian about their rabbit's risks and best way to protect them. Measures to limit risks include: -
• Keeping domestic rabbits in insect proof enclosures;
• Not allowing domestic rabbits to roam areas accessible to wild rabbits; and
• Using strict hygiene measures between handling rabbits, domestic and wild.
