Organic tomatoes get a taste of what super investment can grow

In an unassuming paddock near Lake Boga in the Victoria's north west, Australia's first-ever crop of organic processing tomatoes is booming.

The round reds, expected to be harvested at the end of the month, are the product of 12-year investment by Victorian not-for-profit superannuation fund VicSuper in the burgeoning industry of sustainable farming.

The organic tomatoes are destined for products such as tinned tomatoes, paste and sauces.

According to Richard Furphy, marketing specialist for eco-farming group Kilter Rural, which manages over 9,000 hectares for VicSuper around the Lake Boga area, the initiative is both commercially and environmentally driven.
