One of the lessons coming out of the January 2013 bushfires in Tasmania is that horse owners need to be well prepared for a bushfire emergency.
In particular, where to go with a horse if evacuation is required. Local councils are responsible for the establishment of community recovery centres and that may include the capacity for horses. There was some confusion about that back in January.
Some horse interest groups have been doing some local community workshops to improve preparedness for horses in any future bushfire emergencies.
DPIPWE can provide someone to attend a club meeting to help develop bushfire plans - covering horse health and welfare. To access this assistance, contact the Animal Biosecurity and Welfare Branch on (03) 6233 6875, or 1300 368 550.
