DairyTas have announced the new Focus Farm at Montagu, in the intensive dairy region of Circular Head in north-west Tasmania.
The Focus Farm Project is funded by Dairy Australia and will run for the next 2 years, with a strong focus on business performance.
The dairy farmers are Dave and Jane Field, who have been farming in Tasmania for 2 years and both are garduates of Lincoln University in New Zealand. Their pathway then focussed on
managing farms, 50/50 sharemilking and on to farm ownership in 2006.
Their farm in New Zealand is currently managed by a sharefarmer.
Their Tasmanian business has been in a development and growth phase over the last 20
months which will continue during the 2 years of the Focus Farm Project.
The Field's goal is to develop the farm to operate a simple pasture based
system, focused on growing and harvesting more pasture over time, by increasing
soil fertility, irrigation, pasture species, cow genetics and management.
Part of this development process was the change to a permanent once a day
milking system in May this year.
