Beef Industry

Meat cattle are produced in all agricultural regions of Tasmania. Beef dominates the Tasmanian red meat industry, with the lamb industry being about a third of the value of the beef industry. Tasmanian beef production represents about 2 per cent of the Australian beef herd.

The State Meat Hygiene Act 1985 and the Commonwealth Export Control Act 1982 are overseen by the Department of Primary Industries, Parks Water and Environment (DPIPWE).  In addition, DPIPWE administers the Animal Health Act 1995 and The Animal (Brands and Movement) Act 1984 which underpin all animal traceback programs, including the National Livestock Identification Scheme (NLIS).
